What does Human in the Loop mean?
Human in the Loop describes a workflow in which people review, correct or approve the results or actions of an automated system. In an AI application, this oversight can take place at specific decision points. Which cases are reviewed depends on the task and its consequences.
AN EXAMPLE IN PRACTICE
Where you might encounter it
An AI extracts an invoice amount. If several details do not match, the case is sent to the person responsible. Payment approval remains a separate step; it does not happen automatically as a result of the extraction.
Why does this matter for your business?
You can support routine work without handing responsibility for important decisions to an unverified suggestion. Good review interfaces show the result, the source data and the reason for a query.
How much oversight is appropriate?
Determine the consequences of different errors. Invoice processing or agents that can make changes agents need different controls from an optional text draft. Approval should be a genuine step in the workflow.
Frequently asked questions
Does human oversight slow down all automation?
Not necessarily. You can clearly specify which cases proceed directly and which go to a review queue. The goal is to make important exceptions reliably visible.
Is a “Please review” notice enough?
Often not for important actions. The application should technically make the next step conditional on the required approval and clearly show who is responsible.
What to keep in mind
- Define approval points as mandatory steps.
- Show enough information to support the review.
- Use feedback to improve the workflow.
